Here’s what happened the third round of the Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, CT (WFSB) - After days of intense heat and strong winds, the course conditions were perfect on Saturday. This set the stage for the players to climb the leaderboard.

Heading into the third round, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood, and reigning Travelers champion Scottie Scheffler were all tied for the lead at nine under.

Let’s start with the man who’s still searching for his first PGA Tour win, Tommy Fleetwood. On Saturday, he shot a seven-under 63, with five birdies and his second eagle of the tournament on 13. This birdie putt on 15 helped Fleetwood keep the hot hand late in the third round.

Fleetwood wasn’t the only one out there sinking birdies left and right. U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley had a bogey-free card with seven birdies in round three, including this one on 18. An impressive seven-under day has “Captain America” sitting at thirteen under, heading into Sunday.

Russell Henley shot an incredible -9, 61 on Saturday. He had five birdies on the front nine and another four on the back, catapulting him up the leaderboard into a tie for second with Bradley.

When it comes to the other big-name players, even though it was Scottie Scheffler’s 29th birthday, he wasn’t celebrating. The reigning Travelers champion started off his day with a triple bogey on the first hole. Despite having multiple bogeys on the day, Scheffler got back on track with a few birdies on the back nine, including one on 18. Heading into the final round, Scottie is nine shots back of the lead at seven under.

Rory McIlroy is also sitting at seven under after 54 holes. After a solid first half with birdies on two, four, six, and eight, a costly double bogey on 12 caused him to slide down the leaderboard.

Even though he also started the day with a share of the lead, Justin Thomas shot three over, dropping him to six under for the tournament.

Jason Day has been solid as a rock throughout the tournament so far. By going four under in rounds one and two, and going three under in round three, Day finds himself five shots back of the lead at -11.

And that brings us back to the leader. With this par putt on 18, Tommy Fleetwood went into the clubhouse with a three-shot lead over the rest of the field at -16. Fleetwood is now 18 holes away from earning his first win on the Tour.

While Tommy Fleetwood does have a three-shot advantage over the rest of the field, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, and Jason Day are all within striking distance five shots back. So, we should be in for an exciting final round of golf on Sunday.
