STONINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) - One Connecticut spot has made the list of best secret beaches in the country.

At DuBois Beach in Stonington Borough, the beach is tiny but mighty.

It is a popular spot for locals, but they may be getting more visitors soon.

Frugal Flyer listed the beach as number 77 on its list of top secret beaches in the country.

“A lot of the beaches are a little overcrowded and a little busy, so this is really nice for us,” said Nicole Gauthier, Suffield.

“The beach itself is quality. Nice, fine sand, and people really appreciate it,” said Michael Schefers, Borough of Stonington Warden.

The view is a big draw.

“You can see Watch Hill, Rhode Island. You can see Fishers Island, New York. You can see other parts of Connecticut,” Gauthier said.

The beach is public, but you do have to pay for a day, week, or season pass. It is $15 for a day pass. They accept cash, or you can scan the QR code when you come in.

It is run by the community center located at the end of the borough. The money from the passes goes to the community center.

Visitors say it is worth it.

“We didn’t want to go to Misquamicut or Watch Hill. We wanted something different and off the beaten path, and here we are,” said Gauthier.

Now that the secret beach isn’t so secret, will it keep its charm?

“Locals love it, so I’m sure some people will be sad it’s no longer a secret, but we are happy to share it,” said Danielle Chesebrough, (U) Stonington First Selectman.

“It has slowly gotten busier over the years. People are making more posts about it, so it’s gotten more popular—which is great for us, because it gives us more opportunities,” said Mackenzie Zeytoonjian, DuBois Beach Lifeguard.

The beach is staffed with lifeguards to keep everyone safe.

“It gets really packed. There’s always a lot of kids,” Zeytoonjian said.

The beach is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
