Athlete of the Week: Lewis Mills High School star close to reaching special milestone

BURLINGTON, Conn. (WFSB) - At Lewis Mills High School in Burlington, one high school senior soccer player is close to reaching a special milestone.

“They are definitely excited! A few of my teammates are like, ‘How much are you at now? How many are you at now?” Lily Castle said.

Everyone associated with the Lewis Mills Girls soccer team is eagerly waiting for senior forward Lily Castle to become the third girl in their school’s history to reach the incredible milestone of 100 career goals.

“The opportunity for me to get to 100 would mean so much, and I really hope that it would make my teammates proud and our town proud, because we’re a small town, and everyone comes to support our games,” Castle said.

“Lily’s been scoring goals since her freshman year. She’s been getting 20 or more goals per season. She had a great season last year, especially right into the postseason,” said Quentin Lux.

Castle currently has 92 career goals. She’s off to a hot start to the season, scoring 11 goals through six games.

“The confidence up front, the composure to finish in big moments is what sets her apart. No matter the game, who we’re playing, she finds a way to finish,” Lux said.

Her friends and teammates she’s been playing with for years can’t wait to see her score that 100th goal.

“I wasn’t surprised at all, because I just know how hard she’s worked. I’ve played with her for so long. I’ve been best friends with her since kindergarten, and I’m just so proud of her,” said Payton Hallet.

“Me and her practice a lot. She’s very skillful, and I’m just so excited for her. She worked so hard for it,” said Sadie Aston.

“I’m really lucky to have people who are so selfless and that care about others achievements,” Castle said.

Next year, Castle will be taking her talents to Lafayette College in Pennsylvania to play at the next level. Before she graduates, she has plans of helping the Spartans defend their Class-M state championship.

“When you have someone like that on the team, it just elevates everyone else, you know? She’s a terrific player. She’s going to be a division one player next year, and it just makes everything so much more competitive,” said Lux.

“If we just keep up what we did last year and keep playing well against these tough teams like we have in the beginning of this season, we can have a chance to make it really far again,” Castle said.
