Athlete of the Week: Windsor football quarterback with bright future
WINDSOR, CT (WFSB) - Week four of the high school football season kicked off on Thursday night.
At Windsor High School, AJ Robinson is building a bright future for himself and his team.
He’s this week’s Porter and Chester Institute Athlete of the Week.
Robinson is a four-year starter at quarterback for the Windsor Warriors.
He has the ability to push the ball deep down the field and excels at reading what opposing defenses are throwing his way.
Every year, Robinson has found a way to take his game to the next level.
“It’s really the same thing every year, you know? When I was younger it was a little harder to learn things and stuff, but I’ve got the hang of it now and I’m very confident in myself and my teammates,” said Robinson.
The 3-0 Warriors are the number four ranked team in Channel 3’s top 10 poll.
That’s in part due to their high-powered offense.
So far this season, Robinson has averaged 330 passing yards per game and he’s found the endzone 12 times already.
“He’s throwing check downs to the running backs going through his one, two, three progressions, he’s using his legs a lot more, getting out of the pocket, scrambling making plays, and he’s taking care of the ball,” said Quinn Fleeting, Windsor High School Football Coach.
“It all starts with the offensive line it all starts up front. If we can’t have time to throw the ball, then you can’t throw the ball. Our offensive line is amazing, it’s a new group this year, they’re working hard,” added Robinson.
Having a familiar face behind center for four years in a row has helped everyone on Windsor’s roster play with more confidence.
The team also had a lot of help from wide receivers who have a history of making explosive plays.
“He’s a great quarterback. He’s young, he’s only 17 but he has the arm of an older guy, and it’s just like, his accuracy is on point. Everything’s just right with him,” said Missoni Brown.
“It’s hard for you not to catch the ball, you know? He puts it in a perfect spot for you to catch it... Especially when it’s a deep ball. You know, the ball [is] in the air for a long time, so you know you have to grab it. It should be no excuses. You should not drop that ball, the crowd is going wild before you even catch the ball, so it gives you a lot of energy,” added Jayden Compton.
After Robinson graduates, all his hard work on the gridiron has earned him the opportunity to play college football for Central Connecticut State University.
“I’ve always wanted to play Division One football since I was a kid. So, knowing that I’m going to have an opportunity to play at the next level, it means a lot to me,” Robinson explained.
“I’m really proud of him as an adult, not even as a coach, just as a man and as a mentor for him, because he goes through a lot, he’s been through a lot, and he still comes out here and does what he’s supposed to do,” added Fleeting.
