Northwest Catholic’s Abigail Casper becomes all-time leading scorer of girls basketball program

WEST HARTFORD, CT. (WFSB) - Northwest Catholic senior Abigail Casper recently became the all-time leading scorer in the girls basketball program history.

“It’s a very exciting feeling. I was super happy when I was able to do it and the bar was set high,” she said said. “The previous record holder Sarah Gaspar set it up there, with 1,629 points, and just being able to beat that, and knowing all the hard work that went behind it.”

The achievement comes as Northwest Catholic holds the number one ranking in the Channel 3 girls basketball poll. Head coach Ali Connors said Casper’s work ethic sets her apart.

“I’m thrilled that this is her, that she’s stepped up, that this is her new record. I think she is beyond deserving,” Connors said. “Her work ethic goes far beyond the typical athlete, and I think that that shows in how much success that she’s had.”

Casper’s record-breaking performance comes as Northwest Catholic pursues its fourth consecutive state championship.

“I think that the genuine like for each other, and the genuine locker room chemistry, I think that that is a main factor in this,” Connors said. “They want to see each other succeed.”

Senior forward Zoey Cannings said the team’s commitment extends beyond regular practice time.

“We’re all pushing each other to always do our best. We stay after practice all the time after and shoot together,” she said.

Senior point guard Maeve Staunton said the team’s experience in other sports has shaped their basketball mentality.

“We’ve all played soccer together, and we’ve lost three state championships for soccer,” she said. “So, it’s definitely like, we know what it feels like to lose, and we hate that feeling. So come time for basketball, we have a main goal and that’s to win a state championship, and we don’t lose sight of it and we hope to win it every year.”

Casper will play for the College of Holy Cross next year. Before graduating, she has the opportunity to break another record.

If she scores just under 300 more points, she will break the overall school scoring record.

“Obviously getting the girls program record is amazing, but I just think having the school one, would like, not top it off for me, but make it extra amazing,” Casper said. “And I think with the team I have, I have the opportunity to be able to do that.”
