UConn women’s hockey goes double OT to win Hockey East 2-1 over Northeastern

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) - Sixth-ranked UConn defeated No. 5 Northeastern in double overtime to win the Hockey East championship.

Kyla Josifovic scored on a loose rebound to beat Northeastern goalie Lisa Jonsson at the 15:23 mark of the second overtime. It was UConn’s second Hockey East title in the last three seasons.

A record crowd of more than 2,100 filled the Toscano Family Ice Forum to watch the top two teams in Hockey East play for nearly 100 minutes.

The game was scoreless after one period. Each team scored once in the second period, and the game remained tied through regulation and the first overtime. UConn goalie Tia Chan finished with 57 saves. Jonsson recorded 54 saves for Northeastern.

Josifovic ended the game by banging home a loose rebound past Jonsson for the championship-winning goal. The victory is UConn’s first against Northeastern in four meetings this season.

Both teams now await their NCAA tournament assignments. The NCAA Women’s Hockey selection show is scheduled to air Sunday, March 8, at 11:30 a.m. Eastern on ESPNU.
