UConn loses assistant coach to former Big East rival
Luke Murray to become BC’s head men’s basketball coach
STORRS, CT (WFSB) - It may have only been a matter of time before a big NCAA Division I school lured away one of UConn’s top assistant basketball coaches.
Thursday, Boston College announced that its next men’s basketball coach is Luke Murray.
Murray helped the UConn men’s basketball team secure back-to-back NCAA tournament titles in 2023 and 2024.
“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College Men’s Basketball program,” Murray said in the announcement from BC. “BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition. Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work to build this proud program. Go Eagles!”
The college said it liked Murray’s offensive acumen, player development, and recruiting success.
BC also said that Murray brings more than a decade of coaching experience to the table. He’ll become the 14th coach in program history.
Before spending five seasons at UConn, Murray held assistant coaching roles at Louisville, Xavier, Rhode Island, Towson, and Wagner.
Murray is the son of actor Bill Murray.
Boston College joined the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2005. It, along with UConn, were members of the old Big East Conference.
Luke Murray is in the midst of another NCAA tournament run with UConn. The team plays Michigan State in the Sweet 16 on Friday night.
