What’s next for UConn basketball? Questions surround Huskies after championship loss

STORRS, Conn. (WFSB) - UConn’s magical run has ended. Michigan beat UConn 69-63 Monday night in Indianapolis.

Now UConn fans are asking what’s next for their Huskies.

“This is a team I’ll never forget. I just grew to love them—grew to love them—and your heart breaks, your heart breaks for them,” said UConn coach Dan Hurley. “Your heart breaks for how far the group came and what they were able to deliver for our fans, the staff, the students, for the state.”

There are questions that have and will come up over the next few weeks, and right now there are few if any answers.

The Huskies will now have to regroup. Players like Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. are moving on, exhausting their college eligibility. That is what we know. They are a given.

It’s who could move on or stay in the program that brings the intrigue.

At the top of the intrigue list is freshman Braylon Mullins. When the sharpshooter first arrived on campus, Dan Hurley referenced he is a possible one-and-done college player.

The NBA had already been scouting Mullins in high school. Mock drafts had him on their boards as a possible first rounder. He’s still on many boards, but his first-round value is as inconsistent as his jumper was at times this season.

After the game Monday night, Mullins was non-committal about his future as a Husky.

“I don’t know my future right now,” Mullins said.

Mullins is not the only player who will weigh options other than UConn. The transfer portal opened Tuesday with a two-week time period. Players who enter can still return to their current school, so there are no guarantees until a solid signing takes place.

“People got to do what they do,” said UConn guard Jayden Ross.

The UConn program is expected to make a few moves and add portal players too. A center, forward and guard are all needed to firm up this roster.

The portal is also open for women’s basketball and UConn’s Ayanna Patterson has announced she is entering. She’s had an injury-filled four years at UConn.
