Pregnant high schooler paralyzed; shot during robbery while meeting person from Snapchat

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG/Gray News) - A high school student in Ohio has been paralyzed after being shot during a robbery over the weekend.

The 18-year-old’s mother said her daughter was shot while nearly six months pregnant and may now never be able to care for her unborn child.

According to a police report, Angel and her boyfriend drove on Saturday to meet someone they connected with on Snapchat.

When they arrived, a man dressed in all black approached the car and held a gun to the boyfriend’s head, demanding money.

Authorities said when the boyfriend tried to wrestle the gun away, the man reportedly pulled the trigger.

“The guy pulls the trigger, and it hits my daughter in the left arm and goes through her side. Right above the baby, by the grace of God, misses the baby, but lodges in her chest,” Angel’s mother said.

The bullet missed the baby, but the damage to the 18-year-old’s body was severe.

“She has a spinal fracture at the 12th vertebra, so she’s currently paralyzed. She can’t really use her right arm and she’s got a baby on the way,” her mother said.

Angel’s family says the trauma of the shooting also sent her into early labor at 26 weeks pregnant.

Loved ones say they are now facing the reality of a young woman fighting to survive while preparing to bring a child into the world.

“It’s the worst feeling in the world to see your kid suffering and not being able to do anything about it,” she said.

There have been no immediate arrests in the case, authorities said.

Family members have set up a GoFundMe to help during this difficult time.
