(CNN) - The House of Representatives could vote as soon as next week to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, weeks before the Democratic majority is sworn in.

The possible vote follows Republican losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky) told CNN he plans to trigger a vote to impeach Hegseth when Congress returns next week.

Multiple GOP sources told CNN they expect it to pass.

Republicans point to Iran decision

Many Republicans want to blame Hegseth for convincing President Donald Trump to attack Iran with no exit strategy.

Republican strategists privately acknowledge the party’s problems extend beyond the war. Trump also is commander-in-chief, and the decision to attack was ultimately his.

Trump’s position

Many Republican lawmakers remain reluctant to break from Trump despite the message of disapproval voters sent to Washington.

White House insiders said Trump is supporting Hegseth and wants him to fight against impeachment.
