5th District candidates make final push before Election Day

(WFSB) - As Election Day approaches, candidates in Connecticut are intensifying their campaigns in the final weekend leading up to the polls.

With the national spotlight on the race for the White House, Connecticut candidates are gearing up for what could be a pivotal election.

In the 5th Congressional District, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes and her opponent, George Logan, are making the most of their time with voters.

“We are down the home stretch, and I’m looking to finish strong,” said Logan, a Republican candidate for the 5th District.

Hayes echoed the sentiment, stating, “The enthusiasm is palpable. People are just excited to bring this over the finish line.”

On Saturday, both candidates canvassed several towns, engaging with supporters to solidify their positions.

Logan emphasized the importance of voter turnout: “This is our opportunity to make a change. Every vote counts.”

Hayes responded by stressing the clear contrast between the candidates and the significance of each vote, “We have a choice, and every single vote matters. Everybody’s voice is important.”

Although it has leaned Democratic since 2006, Logan came remarkably close to flipping the seat in 2022, losing to Hayes by just about 2,000 votes.

As Election Day nears, many voters have already made their choices.

Gina D’Angelo from Plainville shared her experience with early voting, “It was incredibly easy. I only waited less than 10 minutes and was able to cast my ballot.”

D’Angelo appreciated the opportunity to vote on a weekend morning, as her teaching schedule makes weekdays challenging.

According to the Secretary of the State, over 600,000 of Connecticut’s 2.3 million registered voters have already cast their ballots.

Early voting concludes Sunday evening, and voters can find their early voting locations by checking their town’s website or visiting myvote.ct.gov.

As the candidates continue their final push, both Hayes and Logan have a clear message: “Just vote. Get out to vote,” urged Hayes, with Logan adding, “Get out and vote. Let’s do this.”
