Garage fire forces East Granby family out of home

EAST GRANBY, CT (WFSB) - A family of four was forced out of their home after a fire broke out in their attached garage early Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at 1:06 a.m. at 217 Newgate Rd.

A police officer was the first to arrive on scene and helped evacuate four people from the house. No one was injured.

When fire crews arrived, they were concerned the fire might spread to the house and conducted exterior ventilation through the roof of the garage, according to Fire Chief Kerry Flaherty.

He said the fire did not spread to the house, but smoke damage made the home uninhabitable. The family will not be able to return on Tuesday.

Several agencies responded to the call and brought tanker trucks.

The town fire marshal is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.
