Coastal storm prompts preparations along Connecticut shoreline

CLINTON, Conn. (WFSB) - A potential nor’easter this weekend has people along Connecticut’s shoreline watching the forecast closely. High surf, strong currents and coastal flooding are all possible.

Restaurant with history of flooding braces for storm

Storm preparation is already underway for many shoreline businesses. Angela Morander co-owns Lobster Landing in Clinton.

“We are just keeping an eye on the water tide hoping it doesn’t get too bad down here,” Morander said.

With the Long Island Sound steps away, Morander said the business is not taking any chances.

“We already taken down the tables and stuff off our deck so we secured that stuff and secure out tent even bit more,” Morander said.

The restaurant has dealt with flooding before. Two years ago, the building got a major upgrade.

“We had this building lifted 4 feet. So before it was lifted it used to flood all the time even with a regular high tide but now it is lifted, we haven’t flooded yet,” Morander said.

Morander said the restaurant has a small generator that can keep its refrigerators running if the power goes out. The generator is not powerful enough to operate the entire restaurant. If the restaurant loses power this weekend, it will close until power is restored.

Residents also preparing for wind, flooding

Businesses are not the only ones preparing. People who live along the shoreline are also getting ready for the possibility of strong winds and flooding, including Branford resident Jeff Provost.

“Tomorrow I will make sure that the stuff that is loose the plants and what’s left of them and the stuff that could fly away in 40-50 mph wind. I’ll make sure it’s put away,” Provost said.
