Protests take place at Avelo after airline strikes deal with federal government for deportation flights

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - Avelo Airlines has struck a deal with the federal government to use their planes for deportation flights.

A demonstration at Tweed-New Haven Airport took place today as protesters try to urge Avelo to reverse course.

Protests have been happening at airports where Avelo has their planes all across the country.

The airline announced a deal on April 7th with ICE to help carry out deportations from Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona.

Immigration advocates say the way deportees are treated on these flights is dehumanizing and inhumane, with their hands and feet shackled and told not to make eye contact with anyone.

Avelo says this contract with the government will ultimately benefit their customers, allowing the airline to expand and improve service.

Despite that, customers and the flight attendants union would like the airline to reconsider their stance.

Several community leaders, including Senator Richard Blumenthal, are expected to speak this evening.
