Durham students head back to school after extended summer break

DURHAM, Conn. (WFSB) - While most students have already returned to class, those in Durham are just starting the new school year on Wednesday morning.

Students at Coginchaug Regional High School and other schools in town are kicking off the fall semester after enjoying a longer-than-usual summer vacation.

Unlike in many other states, Connecticut districts set their own academic calendars, as long as they meet the 180-day requirement.

The district also welcomes a new superintendent, who could eventually decide whether to maintain the late start in future years.

Most Connecticut districts now begin earlier in August to account for potential snow days and to avoid extending the school year into late June, when many students and families are eager for summer.

Despite the extra vacation, classes will be underway Wednesday morning, marking the official end of summer for Durham’s students.
