Two men killed, teen injured after shooting on Judson Avenue in New Haven

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - Two men were killed and a 13-year-old girl was hospitalized from a shooting in New Haven Tuesday night, police said.

Police identified the victims as 19-year-old Chavis Goldson of New Haven and 25-year-old Lorenzo Foreman of West Haven.

It happened on Judson Avenue around 8:30 p.m.

When officers responded to the scene, they said they found two men with gunshot wounds. Both were brought to a hospital where they died.

The shooting marked the fourth and fifth homicides in New Haven this year.

Bullet enters nearby home

A bullet entered the bedroom of a nearby home, and a 13-year-old girl was taken to the hospital, according to police.

Officers said she was not shot and is expected to be okay. They said debris and plaster from the wall grazed her head.

“I can’t imagine a carrier incident where you were in your own home and then you have a bullet come through the window. Thank God she’s okay. She’s at the hospital now and thank God she’s okay,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.

The girl, Kanwal Iljaz, never expected to become a victim of gun violence.

“I was in my upstairs bedroom with my sister and all of sudden I got up and the shot came through my wall. It hit my head and went somewhere,” she said.

Her and her family had just started settling into their new home in the area of the shooting. For them, the violence hits much closer to home.

“It sounded like fireworks,” continued Iljaz. “We went out to the living room and called the cops.”

There is even a visible bullet hole outside of the home.

Investigation underway

Police said the incident appeared to be a targeted shooting.

Investigators remained on scene early Wednesday morning.

They appeared to be focusing on a car parked on Judson Avenue. It remained at that point unclear whether the two victims were inside the car when the shooting happened.

Investigators said they’re using cameras and license plate readers in the area to look for suspects. They’ve also been speaking with neighbors who may have witnessed the shooting.

New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli urged anyone with information to come forward.

“This is a very popular neighborhood with folks,” Zannelli said. “If you saw anything — we know there were several people outside at the time — please reach out to [the tip line].”

There was also apparently a large gathering of people in the area around the time of the shooting.
