West Haven prepares for weekend storms after summer flash flooding
City hopes to prevent repeat of July flooding at Lake Street Beach
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) - Several cities and towns across Connecticut are preparing for this weekend’s storm, including areas already hit hard by flash flooding over the summer.
West Haven, an area prone to coastal flooding, is among them.
City officials want residents to pay attention. They warned that there is potential for flooded roads and beaches to become an issue.
Beach washed away in July
At Lake Street Beach, conditions were back to normal, but a few months ago the beach was washed away by flash flooding.
Crews worked to get the beach back to normal, but there is concern it could become an issue again.
City leaders said they are hoping to prevent that.
Flood-prone streets
Several streets in the city are also prone to flooding when heavy rain comes. Video from storms in July showed inches of water covering some roads. It has been a recurring issue for West Haven, especially near the Campbell Avenue railroad underpass.
The video showed the flood gates closed at that location, which is what city crews do when it becomes too dangerous to drive through. If drivers arrive before crews close the gates and notice water on the roads, they are urged to turn around and not attempt to drive through it.
City to meet with United Illuminating
City officials and power crews are expected to meet Friday morning to discuss preparations for the storm.
