Funeral home owner indicted on multiple charges, including theft and abuse of a corpse

FENTRESS COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) - A grand jury has indicted the owner of a Jamestown funeral home after allegations of widespread fraud, financial exploitation and the mishandling of cremated remains.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Chadrick “Chad” Mundy, 37, owner of the Mundy Funeral Home, was arrested Wednesday following an extensive investigation.

The owner has been arrested on a 52-count indictment. Tennessee authorities said Mundy’s charges include:

• 15 counts of theft of property over $2,500
• 12 counts of fraudulent insurance act
• 9 counts of financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult
• 5 counts of theft of property over $1,000
• 4 counts of abuse of a corpse
• 4 counts of theft of property under $1,000
• 2 counts of criminal simulation
• 1 count of worthless checks

Agents said they began investigating allegations against the funeral home in May at the request of the 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler.

According to state investigators, evidence showed Mundy filed numerous fraudulent insurance claims connected to burial policies, exploited elderly clients for personal gain and mishandled cremated remains.

In August, the State Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers temporarily suspended the licenses of both Mundy and the funeral home, declaring the business an immediate risk to the public’s health, safety and welfare.

During that state hearing, investigators revealed that a financial audit exposed missing documentation and showed Mundy had filed fraudulent life insurance death claims for individuals who were still alive, including his own wife.

Mundy was booked into the Fentress County Jail on an $80,000 bond.
